Customer Transformation – Before and After Andrew & Anna’s kitchen

If the modern farmhouse is a look you love, wow do we have a before and after for you to see!

Andrew and Anna are first time homebuyers, and they purchased a home built in 1911 that was in need of some TLC. One of the rooms that needed the most attention was the kitchen. When they bought the house, it had stained and yellowed kitchen cabinets, old flooring, missing appliances, and the biggest obstacle was a hole in the ceiling.

Working with a very limited budget, these two decided that sweat equity was their best bet. The existing kitchen had cabinets that were in great condition with the glaring exception of the paint and hardware. Years of dirt, grime, and grease had really taken their toll on the finish, and the hardware was very outdated and not the design style they were going for.

Choosing Behr interior paint in Vibrant White, they started painting the walls and trim. The next step was to give a fresh coat of paint to the existing cabinets with the same vibrant white color as the walls.

For the backsplash, they opted for budget friendly paint instead of stone or tile. They picked Sherwin Williams Pro Classic semi-gloss in Letter Gray.

One of the best features of the kitchen that they decided to keep was the original sink. They did add a new faucet in matte black, but how cool that they were able to keep this treasure! They were also able to keep the butcher block countertops which also fit right in with the modern farmhouse design.

The next big task was dealing with the hole in the ceiling. They had some plumbing repairs needed on the second floor and once those were completed, the ceiling repairs could begin.

The existing light fixtures were replaced and updated with can lighting, and throughout the entire room they had cedar planks installed on the ceiling. The planks are 3.5” x 8” v-planks that are ¼” thickness.

To continue making progress on the kitchen remodel, they needed to install new flooring. The flooring they chose was the SuperFast® Frontier floating luxury vinyl planks in Pacific Crest from Menards. These rigid vinyl planks are 7.5” x 48” and they easily clicked into place without the need for glue. The planks are waterproof and should hold up well for years to come.

A new stove and refrigerator needed to be installed. For their budget, they chose these stainless-steel finishes on their new GE units. They went with a top freezer Energy Star refrigerator and an electric range with a self-cleaning oven.

For the final touch, to really bring the modern farmhouse look, they installed the cabinet hardware.

Andrew and Anna needed to find hardware that would complete the modern farmhouse design aesthetic they were trying to achieve while staying on budget. They wanted to find a bar pull and they chose the Naples collection from Elements in matte black. They used the existing holes in their cabinets instead of filling and drilling new ones. They selected item# ELE-136MB - a pull with a 3” drill center and an overall length of 5 3/8”. Their cabinet knobs were also chosen from the Naples collection in the matte black finish. They used item# ELE-40MB which is a 1 9/16” T style pull knob.

We think they really pulled off a huge transformation without breaking the bank. Stay tuned, we will be visiting these two again in future blogs as they continue to transform and update their home. They have some more big changes coming up proving that the little things really can make a huge impact!

If you are looking to bring a modern farmhouse style to your home, cabinet hardware is a quick and easy way to start. If you want to see other design options, check out the blog post we wrote on the topic.
